Crate Soakaways

“Modular Soakaway Systems With High Void Ratios”

Crate soakaways are a highly effective solution for managing surface water, particularly in areas where space is limited or high volumes of runoff are expected. They consist of modular, interlocking plastic or geocellular crates that create a large underground void, allowing water to be temporarily stored and gradually infiltrate into the surrounding soil. Crate soakaways are lightweight, easy to install, and can be configured to suit a variety of site layouts. Proper design and installation ensure long-term performance, prevent flooding, and reduce pressure on drainage networks, making them a sustainable choice for modern surface water management.

What is a Crate Soakaway?

A modern and efficient soakaway made up of interlocking plastic crates (also known as soakaway cells or attenuation crates). The crates form a void structure that can store a large volume of rainwater, which then slowly seeps into the surrounding soil through a geotextile membrane.

How it works:
Rainwater from roofs or paved surfaces flows into the crate system via pipes. The crates temporarily store the water and release it gradually into the ground.

At UK Drainage Design, we specialise in the design of crate soakaways, providing tailored solutions to effectively manage surface water on residential, commercial, and industrial sites. Our team carefully assesses site conditions, rainfall patterns, and soil permeability to create efficient, compliant designs that prevent flooding and reduce pressure on existing drainage systems. Using modern geocellular crate technology, we can maximise storage capacity while minimising excavation and disruption. From concept through to construction guidance, we ensure our designs are practical, sustainable, and meet all regulatory requirements, giving our clients peace of mind and long-term performance.

Advantages/Limitations

Advantages:

  • High void ratio (up to 95%), meaning it stores more water in less space.
  • Lightweight and easy to install.
  • Modular — we can size it precisely for your drainage needs.
  • Low maintenance.

Best for:

  • Modern homes, driveways, and new developments where space is limited but efficiency is needed.

Limitations:

  • Needs permeable soil.
  • Installation cost is higher than a rubble soakaway.
